LCAD Workshop, Part 2!

Here's the latest flyer on the workshop that I'm having at Laguna College of Art and Design. I'll be demo'ing techniques used in a game development environment to create in-game assets. Alot to cover in a few hours, so hopefully I'll be able to touch on a few key things.

It seems that I didn't notice that I was named as a "Lead" as Sony instead of a "Senior" EA. This is obviously a mistake in credit. I have made this known to the school and will have this fixed as soon as it can. Apologies to all who saw the error :) I don't think I've been there or done nearly enough to be even considered as anything remotely close to a lead! :)

You should really read through it, it has a lot of invaluable info well condensed down.

As for your peice, here's an example of what I would do to a simple lighting rig of the scene.

1. Establish the shadows for your scene first. They can be powerful compositional elements, and it helps setup more interesting lighting. I typically place the primary light source off to the side to get some nice dramatic shadows casting towards the side.

2. Once you're happy with the camera and shadows, add a fill light to add some bounced light to the subject. You can add color later. I typically place the fill light behind the camera, or from the direction the camera is coming from (this, of course, is relative to the position of the primary light). You want the fill light to knock back the shadows down a bit.

3. Add rim lighting to your reflected lighting. This is kind of the icing on the cake for this simple light rig. Again, get the values right first. You don't want them to detract from the main area being lit by the primary light source. Add color afterwards. I place this coming a little behind the subject, opposite the primary light caster. You have to play with this one a bit to get it right.

E3 was good this year. Not as crowded and noisy as years past, so its a nice way for it to get back into the groove of things. Great to see all my buddies from Shiny and DHG.

GOW3 made a pretty good showing! We were pretty happy with that so far.

Did this over a couple of lunchtimes... its definitely an exercise in speed when trying to crank something like this out. I'm always challenging myself to be faster and more efficient with my process so I can concentrate on the image. I'll tell you one thing,it leaves for tired hands!

ah so begins some postings that i've done for a private blog of my friends and I. Going through a sort of personal renaissance of 2D work... back to the roots of my artistic journey. I do mostly 3D work now that I'm in the game industry, but I've rediscovered my passion for 2D. Here goes.
